Scott Davis - College & Young Singles Minister

Greetings from the Cedar Creek College & Young Singles (C & YS) Ministry! I am assuming that most of you who read this know very little about our college ministry! Let me inform you about our structure and five guiding passions.

Structure:

Our ministry revolves around our weekly College Bible Study (CBS). We meet Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM and look at various biblical stories and consider how they apply to our lives. If you get there early (9:00-9:15) you will even find coffee and doughnuts to give you those daily necessities, caffeine and sugar! Out of CBS flow various small group Bible studies, discipleship groups, and accountability meetings. Information on fun activities and service opportunities will also be divulged through CBS and our quarterly events calendar.
Sunday evenings are our student lead topic studies, called DiscoverLIFE. We rotate our studies around different issues that are extremely relevant to college students, like relationships, evangelism, understanding other faiths, and dealing with difficult questions about our faith. Besides providing some good issues for discussion, it also gives us more time to get to know each other and to develop a new generation of leaders as your peers lead you in understanding your faith and sharing it with your world.

Passions:

While it is impossible to sum up everything we hold dear as disciples of Jesus Christ, we have developed a five-word summary that pretty much captures what we are about:

Christ - He should always be preeminent in all of our life, thoughts, desires, and actions. It is appropriate for us to list Him first, for as the Bible says, "For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things (Rom 11:36). He is the source of life, without Him we are walking, but spiritually dead corpses (John 3:36; John 6:35; John 14:6). Salvation is in Christ alone and He, along with the Father and Spirit, is the supreme object of our worship. He died for us that we may live for Him (2 Corinthians 5:15) and all of our Bible study should point us back to the wonder of Christ and the power of His cross.

Character - Closely related to our passion to be Christ-focused is our commitment to allow Christ to form His Character in us. He will do it and we are to work for it. We are not to sit by and wait for Christ to make us holy; we are to pursue godliness with abandon. True, we all fail miserably, but we are to forget what lies behind and press on to what Christ has ahead of us. Through His Spirit He will produce His fruit in our lives (Galatians 5:22). As Christ was a servant, we place a premium upon service. As we grow in godly character, we will discover our God given talents and gifts and employ them in His service for His church and for each other.

Community - Christ came to save us and He also came to establish His church. Every Christian should be active in a vibrant Bible teaching church. No flame survives very long when removed from the fire and the same is true of the Christian life. Christ died to make us a community, a church. Sadly, we do not see this practiced as it ought to be. Our desire is to pursue true Christian fellowship - not mere talk about the weather and our favorite sports teams - but true deep fellowship and connection with each other. We should talk with each other about spiritual things, and not just at church! True, we may not have a lot in common, but the love of Christ demands that we overcome our petty differences and love each other as He loved us, sacrificially and sanctifyingly.

Caring - This relates not so much to our relationships with each other (see Community), but to our relationship to the world. We don't want to establish a holy huddle or a Christian bubble. We want to let all people know of the love of Christ and we demonstrate this through evangelism and community service.

Culture - Though this is the final point, it is in many ways an ultimate point. As we exalt Christ and He produces His character in us, we should expect to build a community that cares. As that care overflows to others, we impact culture. We might not see immorality erased from Hollywood, but we can impact the culture around us by our witness to our friends. As Jesus said, we are to be cities on a hill whose light is not hidden. This means that we should shine in the darkness and that we should seek to be leaders for Christ wherever we might be. Imagine the impact Christians might have on the culture if we would only live as we ought!

This provides a quick look into our structure and our passions. Lord willing, it was informative and influential. If you are looking for a family of faith, please visit us. If you are considering the Christian faith, please contact us. Your relationship (or lack of one) with Jesus Christ may be the single most important thing about you. Thanks for your time and may the Lord richly bless you today!
